Job Description:
The California Laboratory Director is a key collaborative member that provides leadership and supports Green Leaf Lab's philosophy and organizational goals.
This position requires strong technical, organizational, and communication skills.
We are looking for an experienced laboratory director with proven expertise in operating and maintaining analytical chemistry test instruments (LC-QQQ, GC-QQQ, GC-MS, LC-MS, ICP-MS, qPCR, and HPLC), regulatory compliance and laboratory management.
This position is responsible for daily operations in the laboratory department including all laboratory personnel; scientific methods performed; instrument operation, calibration, and maintenance; data management; validation and reporting; maintaining Department of Cannabis Control testing facility licensing requirements; proficiency testing; and ISO 17025 accreditation.
This position will report to the Chief Science Officer.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/KEY
Responsibilities:
Responsible for daily maintenance, calibration, and operation of laboratory instrumentation and instrumentation software.
Responsible for the validation and reporting of COA's within company's timelines.
Responsible for overseeing and managing laboratory budgets and optimizing expenses.
Responsible for managing and performing all laboratory testing.
Responsible for maintaining laboratory accreditations and licensing requirements.
Maintains all required records for operations, licensing, and accreditations.
Develops and ensures compliance with company and state policies, standard operating procedures, and test methods.
Responsible for developing and maintaining Laboratory policy and procedure manuals, quality procedures, operating procedures (SOPS;s), written workflows, equipment specific requirements, trainings, auditing all written documents and workflows and implementing new systems and procedures as needed.
Supervises laboratory staff schedules and trains laboratory staff.
Ensures compliance with instrumentation maintenance, including warranties, and schedule/manage preventative maintenance.
Oversee the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS-Promium Element) and general records management.
Responsible for onboarding of new accreditation and testing requirements.
Responosble for researching new test methods and improving test efficiency.
Responsible for complying with company policies and procedures.
Ensure company standards for quality and turn-around times for testing services.
Addresses issues and makes timely, responsible, transparent, and sound decisions.
Involves others in formulating solutions to issues by gathering relevant information and conducting appropriate analyses, which includes responsibility for outcomes and/or impact of decisions.
Prepare and/or review regulatory, managerial, and operational reports.
Maintain strict confidentiality in all appropriate situations.
Monitor expenditures and receivables to meet Company financial goals.
Work with Director of Operations to develop and train a highly skilled workforce based on organizational goals, budget considerations, and staffing needs.
Work with Director of Operations to ensure that employees are appropriately recruited, including hiring, daily management, discipline, promotions, and training.
Work with Director of Operations to create and maintain annual work plans, monitor employee performance, complete periodic evaluations, counsel, and discipline as necessary in accordance with guidelines.
Oversee and/or prepare employee schedules, including leave, to ensure adequate staffing to effectively handle daily and emergency response activities.
Provide appropriate laboratory resources and support to ensure that the workforce can meet current and future business needs.
Coordinate with Account Executive team to proactively assess and resolve client complaints and inquiries.
Attending and leading Company required team meetings.
Compile and prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions as requested by executive management.
Collaborate with the Lab Manager in the management of equipment and supply inventory, including recommending purchases and ensuring budgetary constraints are followed.
Responsible for managing department costs and efficiencies.
Responsible on working with executive management on budgets and forecasts.
Responsible for creating a positive work environment that fosters strong team member engagement and respect in the workplace.
Responsible for keeping abreast of rule changes to ensure science department company with all state mandated testing rules and requirements.
Qualifications:
Master's degree in biological, chemical, agricultural, environmental, or related sciences from an accredited college or university, plus at least 4 years of full-time practical experience.
Technical competence in analytical chemistry and/or microbiology.
HPLC, GC, LC, MS, qPCR, and ICP experience required.
Microbiological experience (sterile technique, inoculation, DNA extraction from complex matrices, qPCR and troubleshooting) preferred.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills including technical writing.
Detail-oriented.
Strong analytical ability.
Experience in laboratory information management systems, computer databases, and Microsoft Office applications.
Ability to provide excellent customer service, manage others, and collaborate with remote lab personnel.
Ability to work independently under remote supervision.
Ability to adapt to a fast-changing work environment.
Ability to be flexible and change as business grows and changes.
